Deborah Shapiro

Dental Hygienist

We would like to take a moment to introduce you to our new dental hygienist, Deborah.  She joined our office in November of 2006.  Our patients that have seen her have been very pleased with Deborah’s gentle hand and her knowledgeable advice.

Dentistry has been part of my entire life, as my father was a dentist in Castro Valley, California.  I knew that dentistry would be my career path since the age of 14 when I started training as a dental assistant in his office.  Though I had a significant detour from that path when I moved to Alaska in 1976  (where I was an owner/operator of a commercial salmon fishing business), I continued with dentistry.  Accompanying some Anchorage dentists, I went out into the “Alaskan bush” to care for many native Alaskans, who were otherwise unable to receive dental care. After I left Alaska I returned to school and graduated in 1994 from Tunxis College in Connecticut with a degree in dental hygiene. Since then I have had the opportunity to work with several excellent dentists and periodontists in Sandpoint, Idaho, the San Francisco Bay area and now Redmond, Oregon.

I am lucky to have married my best friend, Sanford, who has recently opened the Bend Learning Center.  During our 15+ years of marriage we have moved around a lot, searching for the “just right” place.  We think we have truly found our home in Central Oregon.  My husband’s background includes working with children and adults with learning disabilities. We have two wonderful grown sons. Adam is 24; he lives and works at Alyeska ski resort in Girdwood, Alaska, and Brett, a 20-year-old sophomore and business major at the University of Puget Sound.  We all enjoy hiking, skiing, boating, and meeting and making new friends. My husband and I are so happy and content to be in the Redmond/Bend area.

Before moving to Bend in November 2005, I interviewed with Dr. Coombe and his staff. I was immediately attracted to so many qualities of the office that I decided not to distribute my resume at any other office.  What hooked me and what I knew I wanted to be a part of, was an office that offers excellent dentistry, quality patient care, and a friendly and knowledgeable staff. I also learned that each year Dr. Coombe and staff volunteer their time and excellent dental care throughout the community.   I am thrilled to be part of this exciting office team.
